Famous Emeralds from history

The ancient Romans believed that the birthstone of emerald was a symbol of good fortune, prosperity, and fertility. They associated the gemstone with the goddess Venus, who was the patron deity of May. As a result, the emerald became a popular choice for May birthdays.

Throughout history, several emeralds have achieved legendary status. One of the most famous is the “Mogul Mughal Emerald,” a remarkable 217.80-carat gemstone dating back to 1695, inscribed with Islamic prayers and intricate floral designs.

Another renowned emerald is the “Gachala Emerald,” a 858-carat gem discovered in Colombia’s Gachala region in 1967, now housed in the Smithsonian Institution.

The “Patricia Emerald,” a 632-carat uncut crystal found in Colombia in 1920, is celebrated for its exceptional size and color. Additionally, the “Crown of the Andes” features 450 emeralds, including the Atahualpa Emerald, named after the last Inca emperor.
