Amethyst is a beautiful, violet-coloured variety of quartz, long cherished for its stunning crystalline shapes and reputed metaphysical properties.

The name “amethyst” is derived from the ancient Greek word “amethystos” meaning “not intoxicated,” a reference to the belief that the stone could prevent drunkenness. I can personally confirm this is not true!

Amethyst’s signature colour ranges from a light, almost pinkish violet to a deep, rich purple, often with red or blue hues.

The beauty of amethyst stems from its vibrant color, clarity, and the intricate cuts it can take. The most valuable amethysts are those with deep, saturated hues and minimal inclusions (an inclusion is any foreign material trapped within a mineral at any time during the mineral’s formation), making them appear clear and pure to the naked eye. The stone is rated as a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. This makes the gem highly durable and suitable for various types of everyday worn jewelry, including rings, necklaces, and earrings.

Amethyst is particularly prized for its color zoning, a feature where different shades of purple are present within the same stone, creating a dynamic and lively play of color. This characteristic, combined with expert cutting, can produce breathtaking pieces that showcase the gem’s natural beauty to its fullest.

Amethyst is found in many parts of the world, with significant deposits in Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, and Madagascar. Brazil is one of the largest producers, with extensive mines in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais. The stone is typically mined from geodes, hollow, crystal-lined rock formations that can contain numerous high-quality specimens.

In Uruguay, the Artigas region is renowned for its particularly dark and vivid amethyst crystals. Zambian amethyst, known for its deep color and high quality, has also gained prominence in the global market. Other notable sources include South Korea, Russia, India, and the United States, with smaller deposits found in various other countries.
